To turn your WordPress website into a review site, you’ll have to use 3rd party  plugins. There are a few different choices, but after much investigation and exploration, I have found the best solution to be: WPReviewEngine. The other commercial plugins and solutions just don’t compare.

So, I’ll show you here how to use WP Review Engine to smoothly setup a great WordPress review site.

To download the plugin, go to this page.

As you can see on the website, there are two options.

• Lifetime License ($99.95)
• Unlimited License ($169.95)

I really recommend that you get the Unlimited License because with it, you can setup unlimited number of review and comparison sites. With the other license, you can only setup a single site.

The great thing about ordering WPReviewEngine is that you don’t have to worry about the software not working for you after you’ve purchased it. The makers provide a solid, no-questions-asked, refund policy.

So, go ahead. Order and download the software.

Installation

Installing this review site plugin is almost as easy as installing regular WordPress plugins. However, you must read the accompanied instructions.

After you have ordered the software, you’ll be able to login as a client and access client resources. In the client resources area, you’ll find WPReviewEngine Documentation, which is an HTML document that contains installation instructions as well as other operating instructions.

Following the instructions is really simple, but if you want the programmer to install the software for you, he’ll do that for free! In the order page, simply check the box which says “Free Addon: Installation”.

How it Works

The way this review plugin works is simple, yet, very powerful.

This plugin changes the way WordPress works. WordPress is a blogging platform, but this plugin completely turns it into a product review platform!

Creating a Product Review Page

With this plugin, each WordPress post becomes a product-specific review page. Therefore, posts will have new options and settings. Below is a screenshot of the new boxes that are added to the post editing page of WordPress.

These options allow you to easily embed an image of the product or service that you’re reviewing, add your affiliate links, add the categories by which you want to evaluate the product, and more.

The review plugin will use this information to generate a page that looks like this:

Of course, your actual results may vary depending on the theme that you’ll use. Which brings me to the next section of this guide: themes.

WordPress Review Site Themes

Two free themes come bundled with WP Review Engine. These themes are very customizable. However, if you have your own theme that you would like to use, this plugin let’s you do that as well — out of the box.

Product Review Tables in WordPress

The great thing about this review plugin is that it could automatically grab all the product reviews that you’ve created and create a nice looking comparison table that’s very attractive to visitors. Here’s how the product comparison table looks like:

Using this review plugin, a product comparison table like the one shown above can be embedded to the top of your homepage or any category page. It is also highly configurable. You can choose the items or the categories that you’d like to show, and you can adjust its appearance.

Other Helpful Features

WP Review Engine has other features to help you automate and outsource your review site creation process. Consider this scenario:

You can hire someone to write reviews, collect product images, rate the products, and put all of that information in an Excel sheet. Using this plugin, you can then simply take that Excel sheet and import all of the data to your WordPress based review site. The plugin will format the content in the Excel sheet and make it look like a proper review site.

Word 2 Cash is a free WordPress plugin. Its purpose is to turn specified keywords on your blog into links.

For example, suppose you want every instance of the word WordPress in your posts to be an anchor text pointing to http://wordpress.org. This plugin can do that for you automatically.

Just go to the administration page of the plugin and enter:

wordpress, http://wordpress.org

Now, WordPress becomes WordPress.

The original purpose of the plugin was to turn keywords into affiliate links. Hence, the name – Word 2 Cash.

This plugin can be used as a good alternative to commercial plugins such as Ninja Affiliate.

Limitation

To me, the issues below are not limitations because I implemented the plugin this way. It’s the way that suits me. This maybe the way that suits you best, too.

Okay…first…

The attributes rel=”nofollow” and target=”_blank” are automatically added to the HTML of every link. The plugin doesn’t give you a choice with this.

In case you don’t know, rel=”nofollow” tells Google not to increase the target website’s ranking as a result of this link. And target=”_blank” opens the link in a new window/tab.

Second. Some people may prefer to limit the number of instances that should be turned into anchor texts. You can’t do that with this plugin. Every instance will be turned into anchor text. However, if links on your posts are NOT styled to be big bright blue color with underline, turning all instances into anchor text won’t make your content look cluttered or spammy or anything…

Consider this, you have a blog about online marketing, and it has a subscription form on every page. The form could have a call to action message that reads like:

To have a generic call to action not relevant to the page content is just…lame.

Contrast that with the following. On your articles about copywriting, your form says:

It will add WP tags to subscribers!

As mentioned, the plugin integrates with both WordPress and the powerful email marketing system of GetResponse.

Each Post in WordPress has tags to describe the content of a post. GetResponse, in turn, allows you to store information about your subscribers, such as their interests. This plugin intelligently assumes that when a user subscribes to your blog from a post that has the tags: seo, online marketing, and conversion rate, that user is also interested in these topics, so this information is added to the subscriber information in your GetResponse account. You can then group subscribers based on their interests!

Sidebar Widget

If you’d like to have a subscription form in the sidebar as well, this plugin allows you to easily configure a sidebar subscription form independent of the form that appears within your content.

Fully Ajaxed

The form submission and validation is done completely through Ajax. That means, your visitor doesn’t have to leave your page when they subscribe. They see a nice “Thank You” message and they continue on browsing your site.

Custom Campaigns and Tracking Codes

In your GetResponse account you may have several “campaigns”. This plugin allows you to specify the campaign for each form, like [[mlb c="mycampaign"]Call to Action[/mlb]] or leave it off and a default campaign will be used.

Similarly, if you’re used to inserting tracking codes with your subscription form, you can do [[mlb r="mysidebar"]Call to Action[/mlb]]

Installation and Usage

Put the plugin zip file in the plugins folder of WordPress. Then, simply activate the plugin from WordPress’s administration panel.

When you have the plugin successfully activated, you’ll see a new menu on the left-hand side, “Mailing List…”. Click on it, and enter your GetResponse API key. You must have at least one campaign in your GetResponse account.

Then, add a new post or page and type the [[mlb \] tag within your post or page content and the form will simply appear where you typed the tag. Read below to learn more about tags

Supported Tags (Aka Shortcodes)

To integrate with GetResponse and display your form properly, MLB requires that you have at least one default GetResponse campaign in your account. In addition to that, you also can specify a default call to action message and a tracking code. MLB uses this information everytime you inser the [mlb /] tag in your content. You have variety of options in these tags:

Self Closing Tag, [mlb /]

This is the quickest way to insert a form in your content. If you just put in [mlb /] and nothing else, MLB will use your default campaign, default call to action message, and default tracking code.

Enclosing Tag, [mlb]Some Call to Action Line[/mlb]]

To specify a call to action message within your content, use the enclosing tags as shown above.

Attributes

Within the first tag, you can have one or the two attributes that MLB supports. The two attributes are c, for campaign, and r, for reference or tracking code. For example, you could do [[mlb c="my_second_campaign" /] or [mlb r="my_top_form"]Call to Action[/mlb]]. These attributes overwrite the defaults.

FAQs

Can I use a free GetResponse account with the plugin?

To use the plugin, you need an API key from GetResponse. And an API key is only available to paid accounts.

How can I find my GetResponse API key?

Make sure that you are logged-in to your GetResponse account, then go to this page.

Can I use this plugin with another email marketing provider, such as Aweber or iContact?

Not yet. I may make plugins for those in the future…depending on how this one goes…
