Many people, myself included, are complaining about the lack of an objective news source. We see the clear bias in the mainstream media. We wish there were some one who can be objective enough; someone who doesn’t have an agenda. When someone asked on Yahoo! Answers if an unbiased news website existed, someone else, called DeeDee Cortez, answered:
There is no such thing as unbiased. Everyone has an agenda. Some are very subtle. The best website then is “multiple websites.” Read a topic from several viewpoints and construct your own opinion. You’ll be surprised at how a story takes shape when you view it from different angles.
DeeDee Cortez is propably right. There is no such thing as unbiased.
My first reaction to her answer was dismay. I thought “does this mean I will never find an RSS feed that will deliver the most objective and true news stories to my Google Reader?”
Well, maybe I could have something close to a “most objective and true” news site…that is, if someone is willing to make a reality out of this idea that I have (it is really cool):
How many philosophical, religious and political perspectives are there in the world? Probably many.
You have the point of views of Muslims, Christians, atheists and others. And when it comes to politics, you have the liberal, the socialist, the conservative, the libertarian point of views. Every point of view differs from the others to varying degrees.
What if someone created a website that takes a single issue, say the “violence in Israel/Palestinian territories,” and it summarized, quoted or displayed the news stories from various websites that have different takes or perspectives on the issue. For example, quote a news story from Al Jazeera and then a news story about the same incident from an Israeli news source. Do the same for other perspectives and do the same for other news issues.
So, that’s the basic idea. It needs a lot more refinement but I do think that it is feasible. I think it can be a very successful website if it really managed to identify the differing perspectives and reflect their views accurately.
